Photoshop CS3

Falls Sie bereits während der öffentlichen Beta-Phase mit Photoshop CS3 gearbeitet haben, muss diese erst radikal entfernt werden bevor die finale Version installiert wird. eigentlich sollte dafür die De-Installationsroutine im Windows Software-Modul der Systemsteuerung ausreichen. Falls es trotzdem zu Schwierigkeiten kommt, gibt es von Adobe ein Skript, das Überbleibsel entefernt.

Wundern Sie sich übrigens nicht, dass Sie nach Installation von CS3 kein ImageReady finden - dieses Programm gibt es nicht mehr. Die einfacheren Aufgaben zur Aufbereitung von Fotos und Grafiken für das Web sind jetzt in Photoshop integriert. Außerdem setzt Adobe in diesem Bereich auf die ehemaligen Macromedia-Angebote Flash und Fireworks, die in verschiedenen Suiten sowie allein erhältlich sind.

Vor CS3 Design Premium hatte ich Adobes CS2 Premium. Auch wenn meine neue Version kein Upgrade, sondern eine Vollversion ist, entschied ich, die alten Programme erst einmal auf dem Rechner zu lassen. So war ein produktives Umfeld gewährleistet auch wenn es zu Problemen mit CS3 käme.

Als geklärt war, dass die neue Suite funktionierte, wurde die alte am Wochenende entsorgt. Wie es sich gehört über das Software entfernen/ändern/hinzufügen Progrämmchen von Windows, das im Grunde nur auf die verwendeten Original-Installierer zurückgreift. Man sollte meinen, es sei nicht zu schwierig, alle Installationsspuren zu beseitigen.

Nach der De-Installation von CS2 waren aber einige Dateiverknüpfungen falsch bzw. nicht mehr vorhanden. JPEGs zeigten bspw. das generische System-Icon für nicht verknüpfte Formate. Auch Illustrator CS2 schob sich noch überall dazwischen obwohl das Programm nicht mehr auf dem Computer war. Die üblichen Wege der Reparatur halfen nicht - weder eine Reparaturinstallation noch die Dateiverknüpfung über Dateieigenschaften oder Ordneroptionen.

Das war auch kein Wunder wie ein Blick in die Windows-Registry zeigte: Hunderte von alten CS2 Einträgen waren noch vorhanden, Dutzende davon schreibgeschützt. Das führte zu Konflikten. Es brauchte ein gutes Registry-Clean-up-Tool sowie etwa 2 1/2 Stunden Handarbeit, um die falschen Einträge alle zu entfernen.

Eine Prozedur, die diesmal wirklich nur von jemandem ausgeführt werden sollte, der sich in der Windows-Registry auskennt! Hoffentlich erwischt dieses Problem nur wenige von Ihnen.

Over the week-end, after testing the CS3 programs and finding them in good order, I decided to clean my system off CS2. Both suites were separate full versions and apart from moving the Start menu items to another position I hadn’t done anything the Adobe installer should not have been aware of.

At first everything looked fine, the uninstall went through, only the odd [cache] directory had to be removed manually. Or so I thought. Until I realised that several Illustrator CS2 entries were in full bloom. And my JPEGs had lost any Adobe icon, showed a generic system one for non-associated file formats.

Easy to remedy, just right-click a file, choose Properties and change the association. Not so, it did not work. I was able to browse to Photoshop CS3 but not to include it into the program list, let alone select it. Ah, sometimes one needs to go through the Folder-Options dialogue. To cut it short: Same problem, didn’t work.

That left the hard way, going through the registry. Unfortunately that was even harder than assumed. Directly changing the JPEG entries was no option since Class-IDs are involved. I fired up my registry cleaning tool, which found hundreds of old and obsolete Adobe CS2 entries - not good, but easily deleted from the registry. still the JPEGs showed the wrong icon and Illustrator CS2 mushroomed up in all the wrong places.

And the really hard part started. Opening Reg-edit I went through the registry one entry by another to find further CS2 entries*. And there were still scores, dozens of them with read access only. Had to set the rights to full individually, then delete them. About 2 1/2 hours later all conflicting entries were deleted, the offending Illustrator remnants were gone, the JPEGs were correctly associated and showed Photoshop CS3’s new JPEG icon.

This operation is not for the faint of heart, it should really only be done by somebody who knows the registry! There are too many entries to list here, and they may differ on your system. Let’s hope not too many of you are affected by this.

*Obviously I used the Edit->Find menu set once to Illustrator CS2, once to Adobe CS2.
