Es muss an mir liegen, dachte ich erst. Vielleicht bin ich inkompatibel zu Elektronik und Computern, komme ich ihnen nahe – pfft, kaputt. Allerdings spricht die Geschichte dagegen, immerhin arbeite ich seit etwa einem Vierteljahrhundert ernsthaft mit Computern, habe noch länger HiFi-Equipment. Also doch: Es liegt an Navigon!

Letztes Jahr im Spätsommer legte ich die Einkünfte eines kleineren Auftrags in ein Navigationsgerät an. Drei Jahre hatte ich einen PDA mit der Software Destinator benutzt, die Firma war inzwischen vom Markt verschwunden, deren Software auch nie wirklich überzeugend. Informierter Verbraucher, der ich bin, sah ich mich um, forschte, recherchierte, las in einschlägigen Foren mit.

Kartenbild, Funktionen und vor allem die damals noch einmalig günstige Möglichkeit, zwei Jahre lang aktuelle Karten zu erhalten, machten die Entscheidung einfach. Ich besorgte mir ein Navigon 4350max. Das Gerät selbst funktionierte – noch – tadellos, außer einer kleinen Pfadanpassung zum Speichern meiner eigenen Routen und Favoriten ließ ich es so laufen, wie es vom Hersteller

The installer is better than before, now bordering on useful. Unfortunately the error message I encountered [and I guess other possible messages as well] is not very helpful. It just told me that ‘one component could not be installed, Illustrator CS3′. I come back to that.

You may need to re-register your preferred applications for AutoPlay; after installation Bridge will probably be the only entry for memory cards containing photos. This happened with Photoshop/Bridge beta, too.

If Acrobat 8 is already installed, the installer says, it will be updated with new files during install. Not true, at least not as long as you install in a different directory. In autumn I installed Acrobat 8 as an upgrade to CS2 [to CS 2.3]; it was put into the default location on the system partition. Acrobat 8 coming with CS3 automatically installed under the chosen CS3 directory. You can safely uninstall the older version through Windows’ Add-Remove.

Don’t expect to be asked to enter the serial number during installation, the installer does not ask for it. It also won’t automatically ask you to register with Adobe or activate your product. All this happens when you first start a [major] program from the suite - except Acrobat, which will give you a message and then close until you have activated the suite.

It is likely that Illustrator will not be installed normally if you are on Windows XP. I had this problem, and it is a known issue, discussed in Adobe’s forum. The culprit is two registry entries having lost their correct rights.

WARNING: The following procedure should only be followed by experienced computer users. Editing the Windows registry is potentially dangerous to your system.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.svg and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.svgz both need to have full rights for the SYSTEM account. The only way to find that out if you haven’t been pointed to it [i.e. by me here] is to look into the installation log file[s], saved under C:\Documents and Settings\[User Account]\Local Settings\Temp.

To rectify this, open regedit, look for the two files, open theri context menus, and set their rights for the SYSTEM account to full.
